When using the GeneCount Cube for Legionella testing, certain error codes may appear, signaling specific issues with sample preparation, device settings, or environmental factors. Here’s a comprehensive guide to each error code, along with step-by-step instructions for resolving them. If issues persist, contact LuminUltra Support for further assistance.
Error Code 3001 - Instrument Error
Problem: The Cube’s self-check has detected an error, possibly due to calibration issues or incorrect device settings.
Solution: Perform a "blank" test to reset the Cube and verify its functionality.
- Remove Cartridge: Discard the current cartridge if it’s still in the Cube.
- Power Down the Cube: Press the power button on the Cube’s back and wait until the light on top turns off.
- Verify Connections: Ensure power and network cables are securely connected to both the Cube and laptop.
- Restart Laptop: Restart the laptop and reopen the Legionella testing software.
- Power On the Cube: Press the Cube’s power button again. The light should turn blue. If it’s red, contact LuminUltra Support.
-
Run a Blank Test:
- In the software, select Run a test and proceed through the screens without adding a sample or using a Concentration System.
- Use the barcode from an unused Concentration System to bypass the barcode screen.
- Expected Result: If the system displays “Code 3005: Empty sample or high water impurities,” the Cube is ready for regular testing. If Code 3001 appears again, contact LuminUltra Support.
Error Code 3002 - Bubble Interference
Problem: Bubbles within the test cartridge are disrupting analysis, causing the Cube to misread bacterial detection.
Solution:
- Inspect for Bubbles: Check the cartridge for bubbles at the bottom or sides of the tube.
- Remove Bubbles: Gently flick the tube with your index finger to move bubbles to the top.
- Reduce Sample Volume: If the error persists, open the software, select Run a test, and enable Troubleshooting Mode to reduce the sample volume, especially if chemical interference from water impurities is suspected.
- Continue Testing: Once bubbles are removed, proceed with the test following on-screen instructions.
Additional Note: Chemical interference or water impurities can cause this issue. Using a lower sample volume can help in these cases, but normal volume (22 mL) should be resumed if conditions stabilize.
Error Code 3003 - Water Impurities
Problem: Code 3003 indicates that water impurities, such as sediment or high mineral content, might be affecting test accuracy.
Solution:
- Check Water Chemistry: Ensure the water source has minimal sediment and a hardness level below 250 ppm. Use a Neutralizing Water Hardness Kit if necessary.
- Biocide Interference: If the sample was collected soon after a biocide treatment, the test may be affected. Wait 24 hours post-treatment before testing, or use Advanced Mode (see Step 4) if immediate testing is necessary. Sodium thiosulfate can neutralize chlorine or bromine if advised.
- Allow Sediment to Settle: For samples with visible impurities, let the sample sit for 15-30 minutes to allow sediment to settle at the bottom.
-
Switch to Advanced Mode:
- Open the testing software and select Run a Test
- Choose your water source and select Advanced mode.
-
- Enable Troubleshooting Mode to adjust for impurities.
-
- Follow on-screen instructions to reduce the sample input volume from the usual 22 mL.
Tip: Since water chemistry can change, use the standard procedure for future tests once conditions stabilize.
Error Code 3004 - Other Sample Issues
Problem: This error code usually indicates one of three potential issues:
- Low Cartridge Volume: The sample volume in the cartridge is too low.
- Bubbles in the Sample Tube: Air bubbles in the sample tube are interfering with the reading.
- Water Impurities: Chemical interference in the water sample is affecting results.
Solution:
Image 1. Two cartridges with low volumes of liquid
-
Inspect Sample Volume:
- Remove the cartridge from the Cube and check the liquid level in the tube.
- The cartridge should be nearly full. If it’s only half full or has a small amount of liquid, an error occurred during sample preparation.
-
If Sample Volume is Low:
-
- Next Step: Repeat the test with a new sample, carefully following each step to ensure the correct volume is added. Make sure to check for Dial Misalignment.
- Check for Dial Misalignment: During the concentration procedure, ensure the dial clicks into place at each position. If the dial clicks but doesn’t align with a symbol, do not force it; leave it as is.
-

3. If Sample Volume is Full:
If Bubbles Are Present: Refer to Code 3002 instructions to remove bubbles.
If No Bubbles but Interference Persists: Check for chemical interference, following Code 3003 instructions to troubleshoot water impurities.
Error Code 3005 - Empty Sample or Water Impurities
Problem: Code 3005 typically appears when the cartridge has an empty sample or water impurities are detected. The exact cause depends on the condition of the cartridge and the beads within it.
Solution:
-
Examine the Cartridge: Determine which of the following conditions best matches your cartridge, then follow the appropriate instructions.
-
A) Normal Dispense: If the cartridge appears full without issues, refer to Code 3003 to address possible water impurities.
-
B) No Dispense with Two White Beads:
- Action: Repeat the concentration procedure with a new Concentration Kit.
-
Steps:
- Ensure that the grey portion of the Concentration System rests on the blue base while rotating it to position 2.
- After rotating, check the cartridge; if it resembles the provided image below, continue with the remaining test steps.
-
-
-
-
- If two beads are still visible, lift the top of the Concentration System and manually align the cartridge so the needle disrupts the beads. Once beads are disrupted, resume the concentration process.
-
-
C) No Dispense with Disrupted Beads:
-
Action: Repeat the concentration procedure, ensuring correct execution of these critical steps:
- Dial Positioning: Verify that the dial aligns correctly at each position.
- Blue Syringe Use: Push the plunger fully down, then up to the first stop. Never remove the Blue Syringe after insertion.
- White Syringe Placement: Avoid removing the White Syringe from the Concentration System once inserted.
- Minimize Air Bubbles: During sample collection, allow only minimal air in the Yellow Syringe. For the White and Blue Syringes, flick any bubbles to the tip before inserting.
-
Action: Repeat the concentration procedure, ensuring correct execution of these critical steps:
-
Tips: If syringes were frozen during shipping, bubbles might form upon thawing. Flick bubbles to the tip and carefully reinsert the syringe to avoid air in the sample.
Error Code 3006 - Advanced Troubleshooting
Problem: Advanced issues with water chemistry, beyond typical sample impurities, may be affecting the test.
Solution: This code usually requires further analysis. Contact LuminUltra Support for advanced troubleshooting assistance.
