Sending samples for microbial analysis is a straightforward process when proper collection, handling, and shipping protocols are followed. Here’s a step-by-step guide to ensure your samples arrive in the best condition for accurate testing results.
1. Safety First
Before collecting any samples, ensure you are working safely and complying with your site’s procedures:
- Wear appropriate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment).
- Be mindful of hazards such as pressurized vessels, H₂S gas, chemical exposure, or working at heights.
- Report to site supervisors and follow safe sampling protocols.
2. Sample Collection
Liquid Samples
- Mix or roll fluid tanks to homogenize the sample.
- Flush sample valves by running 3–5 liters of fluid through to remove debris.
- Rinse the sample container with the same fluid, then empty it.
- Fill the container with at least 100 mL of sample, ensuring minimal oxygen headspace.
- Cap the container tightly and seal with electrical tape.
Solid Samples
- Collect a representative sample using a method like cone-and-quartering.
- Place at least 5 grams (about the size of a quarter) of solids in a suitable container.
- Cap and seal with electrical tape.
Coupons
- Pull coupons safely and handle them as little as possible to avoid contamination.
- Place the coupon, including any debris or attached solids, into a container. Do not clean the surface.
- Cap and seal securely.
Surface Samples
- Swab a defined surface area for LifeCheckTM ATP analysis, following the Sessile Swab procedure.
- Place the surface or swab sample in sturdy containment.
3. Packaging and Labelling
Once samples are collected, follow these steps for safe transport:
- Label all containers clearly with:
- Client Name
- Lease/Location
- Contact Name & Phone Number
- Sample Point
- Sample Type
- Sample Size (cm2 or in2), if appropriate
- Additional Notes (e.g., pH, salinity, temperature, or system conditions).
- Place liquid sample containers into Ziploc bags to prevent leaks.
- Pack the samples in a cooler with 1–2 ice packs to preserve microbial integrity.
- Do NOT freeze samples, as freezing can drastically alter microbial populations.
4. Shipping Instructions
- Ship samples overnight as soon as possible to ensure accurate microbial testing results.
- Include the following shipping details:
